Right, so there's that done. In other news: this chicky is from a dream I had once. She started out a girl and then got hoogly-booglied into a she-male much to her confusion. Later there was a three-some with some nagas...

My dreams are delightfully fucked-up :p

Still, an awesome picture. Angelic wings and marble columns always go well together.

I just figured out today that the top man is wearing pants. That is not a strangely-placed peen, it is the fly of khakis.

I was wondering why platonic friends would have no pants on with each other.

It's cute, if disturbing.

Wish it was colored, though. =P
Luckypan @ Thursday, June 12th 2008, 9:27 PM
Oh I contemplated color throughout the entire image, honestly! But after sitting back and looking at it, I felt that stand alone, it might just be easier on the eyes in black and white. As much as I love color, there are times when ya gotta just step back and enjoy some line art.

But thank you!

Here is an anthro anteater. I'm going to have a lot of stuff in the art show at Anthrocon (in Pittsburgh) in a few weeks, so I'm still on an anthro binge.

It's been a while since I've worked with solids so much, sorry if it's not all that well done. What about the black outline? Should I change the color to match the background more, make it more transparent, or should I add darker outlines throughout the background? Or is it okay, as is?
Erie @ Tuesday, June 10th 2008, 5:20 PM
It looks GREAT. The outline is great because it is more grey than black. The only part of the shading that looks a little off is on the neck. Otherwise, great job. Those dudes have weird feet, I saw one at the zoo two days ago.
reign @ Tuesday, June 10th 2008, 5:25 PM
Spectacular. I love how the black on her torso/chest kind of looks like a tanktop.
skiddy @ Tuesday, June 10th 2008, 8:28 PM
I think the lines are good as they are, honestly. I wouldn't darken the background any (it's actually rather nice as it is), and if you lighten the foreground outlines too much it'll look weird (bold coloring vs light lines .. doesn't always mesh). It's not bad to have dark lines n_n
Good luck with your art at Anthrocon :D
Matt the Fish @ Wednesday, June 11th 2008, 8:22 AM
the contrast is fiiiine. don't change. Good solids/tonage
Alexxx @ Wednesday, June 11th 2008, 10:44 AM

Hiyo Fearsome, long time no see.

Haven't done anything art related in about a year, oekaki in ~2, so many apologies if this pic is terribad, the color pallet is very... pale. >< Not sure what I was going for other than practice. Enjoy.
Erie @ Tuesday, June 10th 2008, 5:23 PM
This is a great idea, but I think the product could have been so much better if the woman's face and shoulders were more worked on. Besides that, the only thing wrong is her shoulders seem kinda funky... great idea, but I think it's better to submit finished pieces...
reign @ Saturday, June 14th 2008, 3:01 PM
I think it looks just fine. The pale palette works well with the subject, gives it a very soft, dreamlike quality. Finished pieces don't always have to look hellaciously complicated; the simplicity is nice to see.

In the animation, I really like where this was going about a third of the way in... and even halfway in, I liked it pretty well.... your final product here is really cute and I like it, but I wish you had kept going with one of those other concepts/coloring styles. Nice job with exploring new things though... sometimes it is really enlightening to just erase the whole thing and start over, as I see you did quite a few times! But man, I really liked it with the two little monster people. That was so cute.
skiddy @ Tuesday, June 10th 2008, 8:46 PM
I really enjoyed watching the animation, too. I'm a bit sad that the first face you were working on didn't pan out, I think that was definitely my favorite. I rather like the mottled look you went for - I guess it looks a bit more natural? Your monster girls are great :D

haven't drawn here for a while, and I'm really sorry if this pic really isn't up to par. I really didn't know what to do with the background. sorry if it causes an eyesore.
Erie @ Friday, June 6th 2008, 7:13 PM
Try again, and make something a little more coherent. It looks a little random. your shadowing technique is good but remember that things only usually cast a shadow one direction, not all directions.
reign @ Friday, June 6th 2008, 7:33 PM
Hm. I like the elements of the drawing, but I'm not certain if they all work together, so to speak. For instance, the background, while lovely, doesn't work with the more somber mood you have going with the woman. It draws attention from her, in fact, and I believe she's supposed to be the main focus. The lines would also benefit from being cleaner/more defined.

I enjoy your shading, particularly the hair. It's very soft.
Sady @ Saturday, June 7th 2008, 3:14 PM
It's the solid lines and watercolors. They RARELY go together, and they don't in this instance. It's very sloppy and the color bleeds out of the lines everywhere.

It's just not a good combination.
fruitcake elemental @ Wednesday, June 11th 2008, 8:58 AM
Erie, are you some sort of facist art director or something? You should really leave your work at work; life will be more fun. It would be a completely different tune if your comments were actually helpful to the artist, but you just sound like someone who thinks all art is solely created for you.

I like the shading on her hair, however I'll have to agree with Reign about the background. It's nice, but doesn't really suit the mood. Something darker would draw the main focus to the character.

Elementalist @ Wednesday, June 4th 2008, 6:25 AM
Amazing. The shading is so meticulous. The color pallet and design go very well together. Some of the materials have a sheer look to them, I don't know if that was the intention, but it looks great.

The posture is a little strange though... I think the perspective on her right shoulder is off. She's got this Night at the Roxbury shrug going on.

You know what, there needs to be a point and click adventure game in this style.

stunning. really. this board needs more hellboy
Fishy @ Monday, May 26th 2008, 4:01 PM
Woo, Hellboy!

I don't know about those horns, though. If they were evenly spaced either side of his forehead, and he's looking parallel to the screen, I don't think his right horn would be that visible.
horribletak @ Monday, May 26th 2008, 4:04 PM
hellllllllllllllllboy!!! I'm so excited too! I've been waiting what, four long years for the sequel? I love the feel and attitude in this pic.
but I think HB's big stone hand is actually his right one. :x (mostly what reminds me is 'cause of Pete Yorn's cover of Nick Cave's "Red Right Hand" in the first movie xD )
I feel like I need to go buy HB comics to get in the right pre-movie mindset

your character is guilty of copyright infringement.
liz - [Homepage] @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 12:31 AM
does that strike anyone else as a pretty jackass thing to say, especially anonymously?
Erie @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 6:00 AM
The only thing I can see is maybe a resemblance to that girl from flcl. Besides that i don't know any characters with crazy-huge hands like that.

to be honest, this is kind of an ugly drawing. your shading is pretty good, but the legs and groin lines are way off. the hands are obviously so :P the eyes and hair are good.
Anon @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 6:33 AM

ffff - [Homepage] @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 10:20 AM
wtf I doubt any of y'all could do any better, besides i fail to see how this looks like Viral or the chick from FLCL
dont say the piccu's 'ugly' just say it has some flaws.
Crash @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 11:24 AM
I think if you're gonna be a douche, let's not do it anonymously. Thanks.
Anyway, I like this pic. It's true the bottomt half (legs esp.) are kinda off, but And is also drawing this at an odd angle. It's hard to practice something that's at an odd angle like this. The shading is awesome, and her face is definetely my fav <3
Also, I see no copyright infringement. It's also increasingly hard to create a completely unique character these days, so shut up. If the character was say, an exact copy of Haruko w/ different color hair named "Haraka" that MIGHT be copyright infringement.
Kalyandra @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 12:24 PM
When you're doing solids, you've got to be careful. I see a lot of mistakes in this, most notably being the shakeyness of the lines and how generally rushed it looks. Some of the shading is good like on the hair and face, but in other places it looks rushed, particularly on the thigh area. When doing solids, it's best to make it as clean and precise as possible.

Now I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but I've seen way too many people lately copping out of doing a background by making it the same color as the page itself. Sometimes it looks good, other times it looks like laziness.

Overall I think this pic would be better off cleaner with some type of a background on it.
gd-kun @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 2:08 PM
Honestly, I think what the picture needs is a shadow or something else under her feet to ground her.

But the linework here is good.
deadcari @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 3:19 PM
i... i think its the style?
pinkle @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 4:03 PM
it's just the style guys... i personally really like the simplicity of it. though the hands, even though intentionally large, look kinda off to me. the fingers coulda been done a bit better i think, atleast on her right hand.. they just dont look as creepy as the left. I like the band-aid on the knee and the torso looks nice. Good job
rtardftw @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 5:43 PM
No such thing as original art, all artists are naturally theifs and there's nothing wrong with that. If you like the way something looks it hurt to replicate it and change it.

Claiming you did it first is different ;O
Alexxx @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 6:41 PM
This pose is really odd, and thankfully you admit to that. Being in a blue void only makes it seem more awkward.

And yes, I've seen many people around that have latched onto TTGL style, and maybe thats why some people my see a similarity to a character from that series.

But, even if the hands are huge, you have to remember hand anatomy. The hand on the right seems bulgy and off.
And @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 7:13 PM
thanks for the crits.
but like i said on my comment..this is kinda..just a doodle..sorta xDDD;

I'm really sorry to be driving this thing even further, but this would not bother me so much if only it didn't look like an eyeballed copy of the link in my URL.
I didn't go looking for that either. It occurred to me as soon as I saw this.

I know you're capable of some really great stuff that is all your own, so it disappointed me to see you draw this without any sort of credit.
Matt the Fish @ Wednesday, June 11th 2008, 8:27 AM
I shouldn't be posting, but if you had just goddamn posted the link to that picture in the first place instead of being a cryptic douche, we could have argued over that instead of assuming you were giving her a hard time about the quality of the drawing or the character design itself.

If you have anything important to say, do it logged-in

Mr. Orgass @ Friday, May 23rd 2008, 1:53 PM
that would be bob ross, he died a few years ago, was a nice guiy to introduce painting to people. That said, this is great, my main artwork is oil paintings like this. I think you did a great job with depth. I like how you massed the shadows together and showed form only in the light. Nice work
i was looking over your devaint page and i noticed you had a question about water colors. Something if you don't use that helps is the acrylic medium you can mix with them. That will allow you to do layers, cause otherwise it just pulls off when wet again. Also gouache is nice if you want to put in opake areas. Homer used to use gouache, which if you don't know winslo homer, he is one of the masters of water color. I have been into using gouache on black watercolor paper. I personally don't like painting on white surfaces, and watercolor is transparent, so you kinda always work on white. But you might want to look into working with gouache along with your water colors.

I accidentally deleted a message from Matt that said "oh wow, I love you"

I think that link needs a confirmation dialog...

Anyway, this is really neat. I like how you put so much attention into expressing both the water and air environments, even the red tinge refracting through the surface layer. It must have been a challenge.
Elementalist @ Saturday, May 24th 2008, 2:45 PM
That is a beautiful ugly salmon. It's bizarre how much they change when they migrate. I really like the viewpoint and how the red of the salmon just pops. But, I can't make out whether that tuft of greenery on the right is grass in the foreground or skimpy trees in the background.
hclark @ Saturday, May 24th 2008, 8:11 PM

So in the last drawing poeple really didn't like my line work, so i tried to give myself space to work in with a larger image. It's still very scratchy looking, but i thought passable. Also stayed away from the pencil tool which helped me build up to darks instead of trying to tame them.

(Edited on May 22, 2008, 12:36 pm)
Kalyandra @ Sunday, May 25th 2008, 12:28 PM
Even though it's scratchy, it totally works here by giving it a soft appearance. I think the key is to not overdo it.
