this makes me want to watch that show of the guy that drew "happy trees" and stuff. this is gorgeous.
Mr. Orgass @ Friday, May 23rd 2008, 1:53 PM
that would be bob ross, he died a few years ago, was a nice guiy to introduce painting to people. That said, this is great, my main artwork is oil paintings like this. I think you did a great job with depth. I like how you massed the shadows together and showed form only in the light. Nice work
i was looking over your devaint page and i noticed you had a question about water colors. Something if you don't use that helps is the acrylic medium you can mix with them. That will allow you to do layers, cause otherwise it just pulls off when wet again. Also gouache is nice if you want to put in opake areas. Homer used to use gouache, which if you don't know winslo homer, he is one of the masters of water color. I have been into using gouache on black watercolor paper. I personally don't like painting on white surfaces, and watercolor is transparent, so you kinda always work on white. But you might want to look into working with gouache along with your water colors.

Hunsvotti @ Saturday, May 24th 2008, 2:19 PM
I accidentally deleted a message from Matt that said "oh wow, I love you"

I think that link needs a confirmation dialog...

Anyway, this is really neat. I like how you put so much attention into expressing both the water and air environments, even the red tinge refracting through the surface layer. It must have been a challenge.
Elementalist @ Saturday, May 24th 2008, 2:45 PM
That is a beautiful ugly salmon. It's bizarre how much they change when they migrate. I really like the viewpoint and how the red of the salmon just pops. But, I can't make out whether that tuft of greenery on the right is grass in the foreground or skimpy trees in the background.
hclark @ Saturday, May 24th 2008, 8:11 PM
I love the details of the background o_o
lavalizard @ Saturday, May 24th 2008, 8:32 PM

Holy shit, this is amazing! It looks so real!
Erie @ Wednesday, May 7th 2008, 10:29 AM
This is TOTALLY fantastic!! Amazing job! The only thing that could make it absolutely perfect would be some sort of shine or shadow/highlight on the eyes, they look very 2 dimensional and dark compare to the rest. Otherwise, this is FREAKIN SWEET.
bubble @ Wednesday, May 7th 2008, 11:17 AM
Erie, I know what you mean, but in the picture, he had NO shinies on his eyes. IT WAS DEMON TURTLE.

Matt the Fish @ Wednesday, May 7th 2008, 2:13 PM
this is incredible. What amazing detail.

Those markings to the left and the right of his chin are tricking my eyes into thinking they're his mouth, covered partially by a large beak-nose, or even two nostrils. Making him look hilarious.
Luckypan @ Wednesday, May 7th 2008, 3:02 PM
Literally, this loaded and I went "AWWWWH!!!!" really loud. Then I studied it more and went "WOAAHAHHH!" ...This is just -amazing- <3.

Oh man! That’s super cute! I’m going to that place next week I hope I see one of those!!
Seraph @ Wednesday, May 7th 2008, 10:08 PM
My only suggestion is that when you are copying a photo, make sure you have a good framework for all the three-dimensional structures of what the photo is OF, or else little details will end up looking kinda warped, such as with the belly plate in front of the flippers not quite seeming to line up with the rest of the shell.

If you're already doing that, well, it still needs a bit of tweaking, but otherwise, really nice job. This turtle is adorable and the colours are beautiful.
myuu @ Friday, May 9th 2008, 2:33 AM
Woah. It's so vibrant it smacked me in the face. The turtle is very cute, too. Awesome.
deerfactory @ Friday, May 9th 2008, 7:30 PM nice...i like this turtle

cyanide shadow @ Sunday, May 18th 2008, 4:13 PM
this is so incredibly, wonderfully, mind-explodingly amazing in its detail and colours and light and shadows and everything. the turtle looks so real! and the sea-floor and water in the background radiate peacefullness.

Elementalist @ Wednesday, April 30th 2008, 10:00 PM
Wow! This is amazing... I can't think of anything that should be different. What stands out most is the composition. I really like that the flower is off-center... There's a swirling kind of motion going on that starts from the center of the flower and winds itself right back from the right.
liz - [Homepage] @ Wednesday, April 30th 2008, 10:38 PM
whoa. more than i am impressed with the technical skill, i am really impressed by the awesome use of such a classical subject matter. good job!

Brilliance. I love the shadows, they're perfect.
Danielle @ Thursday, May 1st 2008, 7:43 PM
maaaang, that's so fresh. the color are so rich i wanna nibble on this picture. you really nailed the texture on the petals and the smooth way they appear... and the background adds a ton without distracting the eye from the central subject... though honestly it would take a lot of horrid color and gnomes or something to do that. mmmm. lovely.
Patches @ Thursday, May 1st 2008, 9:37 PM
Damn, this looks awesome. Love the shadows on the purple outer petals.
Seraph @ Friday, May 2nd 2008, 5:59 PM
I have always been fond of purple colombine. :)
Luckypan @ Monday, May 5th 2008, 9:06 PM
I absolutely *love* how you got such a tangible looking texture on those petals. It feels almost photo-realistic! Great shadows too <3.
rainbow @ Thursday, May 8th 2008, 11:50 AM
Oh! Columbine! I have severasl varieties including this.
The green is utterly vibrant.
But I suggest blurring some of the petals just a tad, they look a bit...thready?
Kudos for drawing a purple one, purple is my favourite colour.
cyanide shadow @ Sunday, May 18th 2008, 4:04 PM
very pretty. the colours are absolutely divine. i love the texture and the incredible sense of depth; the play of light and shadow. it looks so tangible, like i could pluck it from my screen and feel soft flower petals.
Luu-Bean @ Wednesday, May 21st 2008, 8:07 AM
Um...I've been flower-obssessed all semester.....and this just made me have a mental collapse of wonderful-ness!!! You are AMAZING. DRAW FOREVER!!!
